Bianfu Cave

 



Bianfu Cave in Yunnan Province, China, has yielded fossil remains of at least three Denisovan humans who lived between 167,000 and 134,000 years ago. Denisovan fossils have been identified in only five places: China, Laos, Russia, Siberia and Tibet. The fossils found in the Bianfu Cave are the southernmost Denisovan remains found to date. "Explosive outbreak" of Measles in South Carolina and Utah

 



The number of measles cases in the United States has officially outstripped last year’s 33-year high. And the USA may lose it elimination status.

By July 24, 2026, health officials have recorded 2,318 cases. That surpasses the 2,289 cases documented in 2025. Many of this year’s cases have come from an explosive outbreak in South Carolina and one simmering in Utah. Another 41 states, as well as New York City and Washington, D.C., have also reported cases.

High Tectonic Stress in Southern California

 

San Andreas Fault 


The San Andreas fault and a neighboring fault in Southern California have reached their highest levels of tectonic stress in 1,000 years, and a rupture at one fault could propagate to the other, researchers found.

The results of a study published in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, suggest the San Andreas and San Jacinto faults are primed for an Earth-shattering rupture, which may involve the earthquake gate at Cajon Pass opening to unleash more destruction than a single-fault event would on its own.

Cajon Pass, where the San Andreas and San Jacinto faults connect, is an "earthquake gate" that can facilitate the spread of ruptures.

The San Andreas and San Jacinto faults have caused 36 earthquakes with magnitudes of 6.4 or above in the past 1,000 years. Southern California's last "big one" was a magnitude 7.9 event in 1857, when a 205-mile (330 kilometers) segment of the San Andreas fault slipped horizontally between Parkfield and Cajon Pass. That rupture did not propagate through Cajon Pass, but a similar megaquake in 1812 did, suggesting this could happen again in what is now a much more built-up and densely populated environment, according to the study.

Moon Station by 2032



The far side of the Moon experiences 14 days of continuous sunlight, 
followed by 14 days of total darkness.


NASA is building a permanent base at the lunar South Pole. The project utilizes commercial landers like Blue Origin’s and rovers from companies such as Astrolab and Lunar Outpost. The goal is to achieve early, semi-permanent habitation capability by 2029, and a continuous human presence by 2032.

NASA is procuring the technologies required to sustain a sprawling, miles-long base in a dark, extremely cold environment at the Moon's South Pole. NASA believes that this region of the Moon's surface presents the best access to water ice and minerals. The base will be a hub for mining and processing local resources for long-term habitation and fuel production.

The initial phase involves a rapid series of robotic and cargo missions to scout the South Pole, test technologies, and prepare for human surface operations. Commercial payloads are being delivered using landers with proven heritage to reduce risk for future crewed landings.

Hydrogen from Breadcrumbs?

Breadcrumbs from food waste could replace fossil fuels as a source of hydrogen in one of the most common chemical reactions used in chemical manufacturing, new research suggests.

The new process, reported Feb. 23 in the journal Nature Chemistry, combines natural fermentation processes in bacteria with metal catalysis to generate an array of valuable chemical products from simple food waste. Calculations showed that this hybrid procedure was carbon negative overall, and the authors think it could be the first step in reimagining chemical manufacturing as a more sustainable industry.

Chinese Produce Hexagonal Diamonds

Chinese researchers claim to have made the first samples of pure hexagonal diamond or lonsdaleite. Lonsdaleite is a rare, ultra-hard carbon allotrope found in meteorite impact sites and synthesized in lab. It's hexagonal crystal structure makes it theoretically up to 58% harder than regular cubic diamonds. It is highly prized for potential industrial applications in cutting and drilling due to its superior stiffness, stability, and hardness.


The biggest challenge in identifying lonsdaleite is the lack of pure samples; in many cases, it is mixed with cubic diamond, graphite and other minerals. This makes it difficult ‪—‬ or even impossible ‪—‬ to test and measure its unique properties.

The new study, published March 4 in the journal Nature, addressed this problem by creating several pure hexagonal diamond samples about 0.06 inches (1.5 millimeters) in diameter ‪—‬ big enough to measure the samples' material properties. The team found that hexagonal diamond is both stiffer and harder than cubic diamond, and that it resists oxidation much more than cubic diamond does.

Early Alzheimer's Onset Responds to Single Protein

 



A single gene mutation protects against Alzheimer's disease in people destined to get the disease very young — and now we know why.

The gene mutation affects a protein called reelin that directs brain cells to shred the probable culprits in the disease — toxic amyloid plaques and tau tangles. The mutation makes reelin work much more efficiently, new research reveals.

The finding could point the way towards transformative therapies for the condition, experts said.

The new research, published in December 2025 in the Journal of the American Chemical Society, has identified exactly how the COLBOS mutation protected the patient's brain for decades.

The Brilliant Qanats of Iran

 




Iran has an extensive system of underground irrigation tunnels called "qanats". About 36300 qanats have been found so far. These highlight the resourcefulness and innovation of ancient Persia (Iran). Most are in Isfahan province in the center of the country. Isfahan province is one of the 31 provinces of Iran.

The qanats are ancient, gravity-fed underground aqueducts that transport water from mountain aquifers to arid plains. They are hand-dug tunnels and vertical shafts and represent a sophisticated, sustainable water management system with several networks now UNESCO World Heritage sites.

These tunnels were made famous by the book Blind White Fish in Persia, a 1953 book by Anthony Smith is which he chronicles a 1950 Oxford University expedition to Iran to find blind, white fish in the country's qanats. While the expedition failed to find the fish, the book became a classic travelogue, detailing the unique qanat system and the rural Persian life encountered by Smith and his companion.

The Pigeon Towers of Isfahan Province

 



For centuries the farmers of Isfahan Province in Iran relied on pigeon guano to fertilize their famous melon crops. The towers provided nesting for the pigeons, and their droppings were collected in 3000 squat, circular pigeon towers, each able to house about 14,000 birds. 

Today the pigeon towers are no longer used, but many can be seen along the Zayandeh River south of the Ateshkadeh-ye Esfahan (Fire Temple of Isfahan). Today only around 700 of the pigeon towers remain in the Province.

Christians Who Contributed to Science and Technology

 



Astronomy

Johannes Kepler formulated the three laws of planetary motion. He used Tycho Brahe's Tables to prove the Laws of Planetary Motion.

Kepler believed that science and religion work together. He was a pious Lutheran whose writings include theology. He said, “God is the beginning and end of scientific research and striving.”

"I wanted to become a theologian," he wrote. "For a long time I was restless. Now, however, behold how through my effort God is being celebrated in astronomy."

Kepler said, "We astronomers are priests of the highest God in regard to the book of nature."

Chemistry

Michael Faraday worked on chemistry until 1821 when he began experiments with electricity. He was interested in the work of François Arago and André-Marie Ampère who established a relation between electricity and magnetism. Faraday published on the conversion of electrical into mechanical energy in the Quarterly Journal of Science in October 1821. The mathematical theories developed by another Christian, James Clerk Maxwell, relied on the laws Faraday had established by his experiments.


Genetics

The "father "of modern Genetics was Gregor Mendel, an Augustinian Catholic monk. In a sermon, he preached the following homily, seamlessly intertwining scriptural interpretation with his scientific investigations:

“Jesus appeared to the disciples after the Resurrection in various forms. He appeared to Mary Magdalene so that they might take him for a gardener. Very ingeniously these manifestation of Jesus is to our minds difficult to penetrate. He appears as a gardener. The gardener plants seedlings in prepared soil. The soil must exert a physical and chemical influence so that the seed of the plant can grow. Yet this is not sufficient. The warmth and light of the sun must be added, together with rain, in order that growth may result.

“The seed of supernatural life, of sanctifying grace, cleanses from sin, so preparing the soul of man, and man must seek to preserve this life by his good works. He still needs the supernatural food, the body of the Lord, which received continually, develops and brings to completion of the life. So natural and supernatural must unite to the realization of the holiness to the people. Man must contribute his minimum work of toil, and God gives the growth.

“Truly, the seed, the talent, the grace of God is there, and man has simply to work, take the seeds to bring them to the bankers. So that we ‘may have life, and abundantly.’”

Physics

The "father" of the Big Bang theory of universe expansion was Georges Lemaître, a Roman Catholic priest. Newspapers described Lemaître as the leader of the new cosmological physics, and Einstein recommended Lemaître for the Francqui Prize, the most prestigious Belgian scientific distinction, which King Léopold III awarded to him in 1934.

Lemaître viewed religion and science as distinct ways of interpreting the world, both of which are equally valid. Lemaître once said, “God cannot be reduced to the role of a scientific hypothesis.”
He wrote, “Once you realize that the Bible does not purport to be a textbook of science, the old controversy between religion and science vanishes."

Lemaître  wrote, "We may speak of this event as of a beginning. I do not say a creation. Physically it is a beginning in the sense that if something happened before, it has no observable influence on the behavior of our universe, as any feature of matter before this beginning has been completely lost by the extreme contraction at the theoretical zero. Any preexistence of the universe has a metaphysical character...The question if it was really a beginning or rather a creation, something started from nothing, is a philosophical question which cannot be settled by physical or astronomical considerations."

He said, “The doctrine of the Trinity is much more abstruse than anything in relativity or quantum mechanics; but, being necessary for salvation, the doctrine is stated in the Bible. If the theory of relativity had also been necessary for salvation, it would have been revealed to Saint Paul or to Moses.”

Computers

The "mother" of combinatorial identities for computers was a Roman Catholic sister. Her name was Mary Celine FasenmyerThe research she did during her doctoral studies gained the attention of mathematicians in the early 1990s when advances in computer technology made her research practical.
Sister Celine was told by her community of nuns to go to the University of Michigan for her doctorate, which she did in 1942, earning her degree in 1946. Her thesis - "Some Generalized Hypergeometric Polynomials" - was written under the direction of Dr. Earl D. Rainville who dedicated a chapter in his textbook entitled, "Sister Celine's Technique". 

Sister Caline's research is the intellectual progenitor of the computerized methods used to prove hypergeometric identities. The Israeli mathematician Doron Zeilberger recognized that her method can be adapted to prove such identities. The hypergeometric polynomials she studied are called Sister Celine's polynomials.

Healthcare Among Archaic Humans

 


The skull of a child of around 12 years of age at time of death found among other human remains at Qafzeh in Israel. This individual - Qafzeh 11 - suffered a compound cranial trauma, indicated with arrows, with signs of healing. This individual was buried after people cared for him, possibly for an extended period of time.

Dr. Johnn Hawks, a world renown paleoanthropologist, has written:

There is growing evidence of healthcare in the archaeological and skeletal record of hominins. In our article we point to some of the famous cases, like the KNM-ER 1808 individual, who lived around 1.6 million years ago and survived for some time with debilitating and painful periosteal reaction and cortical bone thickening. In the Middle Pleistocene, the case of craniosynostosis of the Cranium 14 individual from Sima de los Huesos is notable; in the Late Pleistocene record, Neanderthals with evidence of extensive osteoarthritis, losses of limbs, and near-complete loss of teeth are also very well known.



Some of the humans buried at Qafzeh Cave were covered with red ocher, a symbolic blood covering, suggesting the hope for life after death.

The Glow of Life

 



Biophotons (from the Greek βίος meaning "life" and φῶς meaning "light") are photons of light in the ultraviolet and visible light range that are produced by a biological system.

Catalina Curceanu is a nuclear and quantum physicist at Italy’s National Institute of Nuclear Physics–National Laboratories of Frascati. She has been studying biophotons, a by-product of normal cellular processes, though it’s unclear how they form. 

Normal cellular processes create biophotons, though the light is not visible to the naked eye. These spontaneous emissions are thought to be associated with generation of free radicals due to energy metabolic processes.

Quantum physicist Christoph Simon, of the University of Calgary in Canada, believes that when these reactive molecules attack lipids — long links of fatty acids — they produce “a kind of a chain reaction” and energy is released. Some biophotons escape, “about 1,000 photons per square centimeter per second” from our skin, Simon says. It’s about a millionth the intensity of a firefly and can’t be seen with the naked eye.

As early as in 1923, Gurwitsch, a Russian scientist, observed optical radiation during mitosis in onion roots and called it "mitogenetic radiation". Modern biofield theory has extended this hypothesis to postulate electromagnetic interactions between cells for control and for information transfer.

2025 Nobel Prize Winners in Medicine

 



The 2025 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to Mary E. Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell and Shimon Sakaguchi for their work on how our immune system is prevented from attacking our organs.

The three scientists' research provides insights into keeping the immune system under control to fight microbes and avoid autoimmune diseases. Their research revealed how our bodies use regulatory T cells to keep the immune system in check.

Their work has launched a new field in peripheral tolerance research and led to the development of new medical treatments, including for cancer and autoimmune diseases.

New Treatment Coming for Stomach Cancer


An estimated 26,890 people in the U.S. were diagnosed with stomach cancer, and 10,880 died of the disease in 2024, according to the National Cancer Institute.

For many patients, by the time stomach cancer is diagnosed, it has already spread, or metastasized, throughout the abdomen. Newer chemotherapy and immunotherapy treatments have made it possible for patients with advanced stomach cancer to live for an average of 10 to 17 months after diagnosis.

The UT Dallas and UT Southwestern researchers hope their enhanced therapy can improve patients’ prognoses.

“There is a dire need for treatments to help people with advanced stomach cancer live longer,” Obaid said. “If successful, our approach ultimately can help patients with stomach cancer live longer after the cancer has spread.”

The approach uses lab-designed molecules and far-red or near-infrared light to “prime” the immune system to help it attack stubborn cancer cells, said Dr. Girgis Obaid, assistant professor of bioengineering in the Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science.

For many patients, the extension of life between10 to 17 months after diagnosis allows them to attend to matters that they may have neglected: drawing a Last Will and Testament, arranging for a funeral and burial, spending time with family and friends, and letting go of the burdensome resentments that may have kept them from closer communion with God.

Chinese Carbon Nanotube Insulator

 

Scientists are searching for new, advanced materials that can block heat while also being thin and lightweight. In a paper published in Advanced Functional Materials, Chinese researchers at Tsinghua University describe how they stacked and wound together very thin, flexible films of carbon nanotubes to create an insulation material called super-aligned carbon nanotube films (SACNT-SF). This revolutionary material blocks heat more effectively than any other known insulator at high temperatures.

The new carbon nanotube insulator can withstand high temperatures up to 2,600°C, outperforming all other materials used for extreme-temperature applications. This breakthrough could be used for heat shields on hypersonic vehicles and spacecraft during re-entry into the atmosphere and in other high-temperature environments.

In addition to its superior insulation, SACNT-SF is also remarkably durable. It can withstand repeated heating and cooling cycles and remains stable up to 3,000°C in an argon atmosphere. And unlike bulky insulation material, this innovative substance is made of paper-thin films that can easily bend around a variety of shapes.

Understanding "Culture"

A member has asked about the meaning of the term "culture", and she would like to know "what constitutes a culture?"

When we speak of a "culture" we must recognize that people adapt to the environment, which means that the culture will reflect its environment. Desert cultures around the world have much in common. River cultures around the world have much in common. Coastal populations share many common features. The same is true for the populations of the Artic. This is one of the more profound observations of Franz Boas, the American anthropologist, whose initial studies were done among the Eskimos.

Not surprisingly, the earliest human populations lived near major water sources such a rivers and lakes. Genesis describes Eden as a vast well-watered region extending from the Upper Nile to the Tigris and Euphrates. This is the region inhabited by the early Hebrew (4000-2000 BC) who dispersed into the areas shown on this map. The oldest known site of Horite Hebrew worship was at Nekhen on the Nile.



They traveled along the rivers that interconnected in Africa during the Africa Humid Period, also known as the African Aqualithic. The rock paintings that are found across what is today the Sahara reveal that the region was once green and watered. These images show people swimming and fishing.

Noah's homeland was in the region of Lake Chad about 6000 years ago. This is the only place on earth said to be Noah's homeland by the local populations. They call it Borno or Benue, both meaning "land of Noah". The local Kanari people call Lake Chad Buhar Nuhu, meaning "Sea of Noah". The now dry Sahara was much wetter then and the Chad Basin overflowed. Indeed, from Noah's perspective, all of his territory (eretz) would have appeared to be under water.

A distinctive trait of the Hebrew marriage and ascendancy pattern drove their dispersion. Hebrew sent-away sons were to move away from the Hebrew ruler's proper heir and establish territories of their own.

Noah was probably a sent-away son. His Hebrew ancestors likely lived in the Nile Valley. Some of those Hebrew ancestors may have been cave dwellers living along the Nile River.

His culture was that of the paleolakes of Africa. Archaeological research has identified various populations that lived at paleolakes near Noah's territory. See Paul Sereno's findings at Gobero

Paleolake populations were fishing and boating cultures. This Dufuna black mahogany boat was found in 1987 in Yobe State (Nigeria) buried 16 feet under clays and sands which alternating sequence showed evidence of deposition in standing and flowing water. The dugout is 8000 years old. By comparison, Egypt's oldest boat is 5000 years old.

Peter Breunig (University of Frankfurt) specializes in African archaeology. He has written this description of the Dufuna boat: “The bow and stern are both carefully worked to points, giving the boat a notably more elegant form”, compared to “the dugout made of conifer wood from Pesse in the Netherlands, whose blunt ends and thick sides seem crude”.

Breunig added, "Judging by stylistic sophistication, Breunig reasons that, “It is highly probable that the Dufuna boat does not represent the beginning of a tradition, but had already undergone a long development, and that the origins of water transport in Africa lie even further back in time.”

The Distinction between Race and Ethnicity

This week a friend asked about castes. He wanted to know if a caste ever becomes a race, though he recognizes that "race" is a modern construct and a false understanding of human diversity. That is why the term does not appear in the Bible. (See The Bible and the Question of Race.)

Molecular genetics has demonstrated the inadequacy of the concept of race. (See Race and genetics do not line up well, new study confirms | Live Science)

A caste may be regarded as an ethnic group because the members share a cultural heritage, language, religion, ancestry, and traditions. Ethnicity pertains to the cultural aspects that define a group's identity and distinguish it from others.

Most castes have a distinctive kinship pattern in which marriage partners are taken only from within the caste (caste endogamy). This is especially true of castes of high social rank, such as the early Hebrew ruler-priest caste and the Brahmins of India. Like the early Hebrew (4000-2000 BC), the traditional roles of the Brahmins involved teaching, studying, preserving the sacred scriptures, performing religious rituals, and advising rulers.

The Jews are an example of an ethnic group. Their identity is found in a shared religious heritage and common practices such as the observance of Jewish holidays, circumcision, and dietary laws. However, the genetic makeup of Jews is not like that of a caste. Some are Jewish because they were born to Jewish mothers. Some are born to Gentile mothers and become Jewish by conversion under the direction of a rabbi. 

Dr. Harry Ostrer, director of the human genetics program at the New York University School of Medicine, led one of the studies that compared the genetic makeup of Jewish populations from around the world with African populations. Ostrer found that modern Jewish populations have African ancestry. David Reich, associate professor of genetics at Harvard Medical School, and his colleagues decided to explore further and found that modern Jews can attribute about 3 to 5 percent of their ancestry to sub-Saharan Africans. Of course, all living humans have ancestry that can be traced back to our early ancestors who lived along the major water systems of Africa.

Spain's Energy Advances and Vulnerability

Spain's dependence on renewable energy sources has been growing significantly, with over 50% of its electricity generated from renewable sources, including wind, solar, and hydropower. This increase has been accompanied by a reduction in fossil fuel use, making Spain a global leader in renewable energy deployment.

In 2024, Spain relied on fossil fuels for 23% of its electricity. Its emissions per capita were below the global average. Spain is the European country with the third highest renewable energy generation capacity and 11th lowest CO2 emissions per inhabitant.

Spain is fortunate to have a very sunny southern region with offshore generation sources, and a high windy Plateau (remember Quijote's windmills?)

The main source of energy in the homes is electricity, generated by wind, nuclear power and natural gas. However, as with most countries, the electric power grid in Spain is vulnerable. On April 28, 2025, there was a major power blackout through Spain. The outage affected airports, shops and offices across Spain, Portugal and parts of France. 

Many people had to be rescued from stalled elevators and the subway lines were not operating. There were long lines of people waiting to take busses. The outage cut phone service and shut down traffic lights and ATM machines.

Backup systems provided power to hospitals, prisons, airports and nuclear power plants.

As to the possible cause of the massive outage, an engineer explained, "One possible cause for a highly connected network is for one area to go down due to substation transformer failure or shorted/failure of a transmission line which can cause additional circuits to open, sort of a domino effect as the system tries to stabilize (and fails)! As the dominos continue to fall - the failure area gets larger and larger."

A power engineer from the U.K. explained, "The Iberian grid suffered a disturbance in the south-west at 12:33. In 3.5 seconds this worsened and the interconnection to France disconnected. All renewable generation then went off-line, followed by disconnection of all rotating generation plant. The Iberian blackout was complete within a few seconds."

The Potential of Lab-Grown Teeth

Scientists in the U.K. have made significant progress in growing human teeth in a lab, offering a potential alternative to traditional fillings and implants. The scientists have developed a new material that may allow them to grow teeth in the lab.

The material allows cells to communicate with one another as they would in the body, enabling them to develop into tooth cells. This was reported in the journal ACS Macro Letters. The material was made from hydrogel — a soft, gel-like material that can absorb large amounts of water — and emulates the environment around the cells in the body, known as the matrix.

Scientists at King's College London have been working on a process for growing teeth from stem cells which interact to signal molecules to trigger tooth formation. The stem cells differentiate into various forms of cells, which then secrete the materials that the tooth is eventually made from, such as enamel, dentin and cementum.

"As the field progresses, the integration of such innovative techniques holds the potential to revolutionise dental care, offering sustainable and effective solutions for tooth repair and regeneration," study co-author Ana Angelova Volponi, a researcher at King's College London, said in the statement.

Having created the environment to grow teeth, scientists now must work out how to get them from the lab to a patient's mouth.
